RWS&S organization has achieved remarkable success in providing safe Drinking water to rural population of district Nuapada through different water supply programme i.e. sinking of tube wells and executing rural piped water supply scheme with the help of district administration as a while. However we are still facing a number of challenges in providing potable water to some of rural unapproachable area like Sunabeda and Nangalbod dry patches due to depletion of ground water as well as last but not least fluoride affected areas of Boden block. Developing hygiene awareness, helping people to become conscious of there relationship between safe water, sanitation, health and development and bringing about a change in the attitude and behavior appear to be some of the difficult task which are now going to be carried out through lunching of “Swajaldhara” and “Total Sanitation Campaign” the two valuable Govt. programmes. To promote sustainability of safe drinking water systems, the assets and the responsibility for operation and maintenance need to be transferred to the local Panchayats for effective repair and maintenance of the rural water supply systems. (This is with the introduction of the Panchayati Raj System under the constitutional 73^rd amendment Act, 1992). It is hoped sustainability of the water supply system.

Fluoride problem:

In the district in 905 habitations in 387 villages are partially or fully affected with fluoride. Out of which 136 habitation were covered with PWS out of which 136 habitations were covered with PWS. Safe drinking water source is available in 210 habitations within 300 mt. distance. 16 nos of habitations were going to be submerged in Lower Indra irrigation project. For the balance habitation with safe drinking water source 67 PWS and 320 sanitation wells will be constructed for which necessary action plan has been approved. For long term solution of these affected habitation 21 mega Water supply system at 273.87 crore is going to taken up through BRGF peripheral development, WR department, RIDF, NRDWS programme under water quality process etc.
