Sericulture in Nuapada District

Seri culture:
There are 3 types of Sericulture.

  1. Mulberry
  2. Cocoon cultivation in - Arjun/Asana leaves
  3. Endi cultivation ( Jada –castor tree)

In Nuapada district only cocoon cultivation are being carried out for business purpose. Central silk board and State Govt. are helping both cocoon farm and cocoon cultivation for their development. The following steps are being taken to develop the sericulture in Nuapada District.

    1. Plantation of Arjun and Asana tree and its care
    2. Development of cocoon seeds godown
    3. Insurance for cocoon cultivation
    4. Insurance for cocoon farmer.
    5. Development of chouki garden.
    6. Providing free exhibition, training and technical knowledge.
    7. Supply of cocoon cultivation implements to farmer
    8. Supply of cocoon seeds material to cocoon farmer.

Why cocoon cultivation?

      1. It is a cash crop
      2. It provides work to all the family members for 3 to 4 months.
      3. Income is more than the investment in cocoon cultivation
      4. It creates work for women and senior members of a family.
      5. It creates opportunity for self employment and self reliance.
      6. It is best medium for conservation of forest.
      7. Price of cocoon & silk thread is increasing day by day.

Assistance for raising of systematic Tassar food Plantation:  
            The main objective of Sericulture is to uplift and to enhance the Socio-economy standard of the rural poors basically covering under BPL group as well as the ST & SC people. Under this scheme it has been proposed to take up 40 Hac of Asan & Arjun plantation with 40 nos of beneficiary. After completion of three years, the same will be handed over to the beneficiary 1 hac to each beneficiary. Each beneficiary will be enabled to earn Rs. 6000/- per year to Rs. 8000/- per year from silk worm rearing and get self employed. Besides the family members of the beneficiaries will be engaged if reeling & spinning on Tassar is introduced.

Strategy for Sericulture development:

  1. Increase in qualitative food plants for better quality cocoon production
  2. Supply of quality seed/egg to farmers
  3. Training of farmers and departmental staffs
  4. More plantations by NREG schemes and the garden can be given to land less BPL people
